With an open environment, we encourage students to speak freely of whatever their heart desires (given that it is appropriate), as a result it is not a specific theme-based event.

It is a learning journey from practicing infront of a mirror at home to presenting amongst 1000s at a venue. This allows contestants to grow as they practice and enhance their public speaking skills, get rid of stage fright and believing in yourself.

WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT SPEAK UP

  • "Speak Up gave me a platform to express myself through spoken word, and seeing how scarce these platforms are, it really was such a blessing for me along with all the other contestants. The welcoming atmosphere, the organization, and the overall support of all those involved made this competition a true success and I am extremely grateful for that. Spoken word gives power, voice and change. It combines performance with vulnerability, poetry with rhythm and pain with beauty. Having Speak Up as an outlet for such a needed art is a gift I will continue to cherish!"

    Ema Gonzalez
    Speak Up Performer,
  • "Speak Up is creativity, it is community, and it is power. It is a venue for young people to express their ideas and their concerns in ways that reflect their individuality. Whether you choose to perform or just to listen, you will be transformed by this event!"

    Marianne Lynch
Professor of English Literature, Vanier College
  • "Speak Up brings together student poets from several Montreal-area schools and challenges them to find their voice through spoken word. The experience empowers performers and offers them a safe space to explore the issues and ideas of importance to youth."

    Anne Beamish
Secondary ELA Consultant, English Montreal School Board
  • " "Speak Up" gave me the opportunity to spread awareness on issues that are dear to me. I was able to express my views, without holding back, to a supportive and engaged audience. It allows students to showcase their writing talent and explore their creativity.
